Aviwe Mati­wane is a Rhodes Uni­ver­sity PhD stu­dent in Palaeon­tol­ogy - the branch of sci­ence con­cerned with fos­sil an­i­mals and plants.

The 30-year-old from Mqan­duli, in the Transkei, com­pleted her un­der­grad­u­ate de­gree in so­cial sci­ences at an East­ern Cape Uni­ver­sity be­fore choos­ing Rhodes as her ‘home’ for post­grad­u­ate stud­ies.

“I have al­ways wanted to do my sci­ence stud­ies at Rhodes Uni­ver­sity,” Mati­wane said.

“This place is renowned for aca­demic ex­cel­lence, es­pe­cially the Depart­ment of Botany.”
