Top veteran tennis on the cards

The annual Kenton Veterans tennis tournament, the premier event for veterans in the area, takes place at the Kenton-on-Sea Tennis Club from 16 - 17 September.

This tournament has been held for over 25 years and attracts top veteran players in teams from all parts of the Eastern Province, including East London, Graaff-Reinet, Bedford, Grahamstow­n, Port Elizabeth and St Francis Bay.

A welcoming cocktail evening kicks off proceeding­s on Friday 15 at 6pm. Play begins early on Saturday and continues throughout the day. A dinner takes place at the clubhouse on Saturday evening and then play continues with the play-off and final matches on Sunday morning. The tournament will end with lunch and a prize-giving ceremony.

A total of eight teams made up of eight players each (four men and four women), with the women over 45 and the men over 50. Men’s doubles, women’s doubles and mixed doubles are played in a knockout format with a reverse draw for first round losers. Anthony Bayley, Kenton-onSea Tennis Club captain and tournament co-ordinator said: “Tennis of the highest quality will be on display”.

The Kenton Tennis Cub, establishe­d in the early 1960s is the host and organiser of the tournament. Players and supporters together with club members are expected to number well over a hundred on the day and “spectators/ visitors to this beautiful area are more than welcome,” said Bayley.
