Settler Family 6-a-side set for tomorrow
The 20th biannual Salem Settler Family 6-a-side cricket tournament takes place at the Salem sports club tomorrow. Of the original six families that took part in the first event in 1979, only the Emslie’s and Wilmot’s will partake in tomorrow’s event. The Bradfields, Claytons, Longs and Purdons are the other families who took part in year’s gone by.
Completing the line-up this year are the Amms, Biggs, Emslies and Ford who will play against one another in Group 1. Making up Group 2 are the Brothertons, Hobsons, Kings and Wilmots.
The tournament is usually well supported with farmers and their families as well as residents from surrounding district making the trip to Salem.
There will be a number of former provincial and country districts players in action tomorrow. Larry Hobson, is a former Eastern Province player and loyal supporter of the tournament, who will play this years after missing the 2015 event due to moving to the UK.
“As always the event unites family and friends who enjoy the whole atmosphere and it has been described as a perfect family fun day,” said organiser Sheila Long.
The action starts at 8.30am with the round robin games. The top team from each group will contest the final at about 4.30pm. The defending champs are the Biggs family.
In 1979, the first Salem Settler Family 6-a-side tournament saw the Purdon family arrive in true Settler Style.
