Set­tler Fam­ily 6-a-side set for to­mor­row

The 20th bian­nual Salem Set­tler Fam­ily 6-a-side cricket tour­na­ment takes place at the Salem sports club to­mor­row. Of the orig­i­nal six fam­i­lies that took part in the first event in 1979, only the Em­slie’s and Wilmot’s will par­take in to­mor­row’s event. The Brad­fields, Clay­tons, Longs and Pur­dons are the other fam­i­lies who took part in year’s gone by.

Com­plet­ing the line-up this year are the Amms, Biggs, Em­slies and Ford who will play against one an­other in Group 1. Mak­ing up Group 2 are the Brother­tons, Hob­sons, Kings and Wil­mots.

The tour­na­ment is usu­ally well sup­ported with farm­ers and their fam­i­lies as well as res­i­dents from sur­round­ing district mak­ing the trip to Salem.

There will be a num­ber of for­mer provin­cial and coun­try dis­tricts play­ers in ac­tion to­mor­row. Larry Hob­son, is a for­mer East­ern Prov­ince player and loyal sup­porter of the tour­na­ment, who will play this years af­ter miss­ing the 2015 event due to mov­ing to the UK.

“As al­ways the event unites fam­ily and friends who en­joy the whole at­mos­phere and it has been de­scribed as a per­fect fam­ily fun day,” said or­gan­iser Sheila Long.

The ac­tion starts at 8.30am with the round robin games. The top team from each group will con­test the fi­nal at about 4.30pm. The de­fend­ing champs are the Biggs fam­ily.
