His­toric medals for Kingswood Mu­seum

A re­cent vis­i­tor to Kingswood Col­lege was Robin GaneMcCalla from Bos­ton, Mas­sachusetts, who came to present his grand­fa­ther’s World War 2 medals to the Col­lege Mu­seum.

His grand­fa­ther was Old Kingswood­ian Dr Philip Gane MBE PhD FRSSA, a geo­ph­ysist at the Bernard Price In­sti­tute in Jo­han­nes­burg. Dur­ing World War 2 he was part of the team set up by Pro­fes­sor Basil Schon­land to de­velop a radar sys­tem to pro­tect the South African coast and then the team be­came part of the Spe­cial Sig­nal Ser­vices, to pro­tect the Suez Canal and the Si­nai Coast. Philip Gane was pro­moted to the rank of Ma­jor and was awarded the MBE for his ser­vices to the war ef­fort.
