Thank you for catching the genets

Grocott's Mail - - OPINION AND ADVICE -

I noticed a strange looking “cat” outside my bedroom window a few nights ago. It ate the food for a cat I’ve been feeding. I spoke to Lyn Grant who runs the Feral Cat society and she agreed that we should try and catch this “cat”. In the meantime I spoke to Dr Brendan Cole at Grahamstown Veterinary Clinic about this animal and he suggested that it might a genet.

Dr Cole mentioned that he would come and collect it at any time and release it in the Coleridge reserve. A cat trap was set up on my verandah by Lyn. Later that night I checked the trap and discovered that the “cat” was indeed a genet! Dr Cole came immediately and took the genet to the reserve where it was released.

A week later a second, smaller genet appeared on the verandah.

Once again I arranged with Lyn Grant to bring the cat trap and this genet was also caught. Dr Cole came to collect it and I was fortunate to go with him to the reserve and observe its release into the wild.

I’m really grateful to Lyn Grant and Dr Cole for going the extra mile in ensuring that these genets were returned to their natural habitat.

Thank you.
