[It’s in the detail]
Throughout the house, old furniture and heirlooms have been given a new lease on life. One such heirloom is a dinner service that belonged to Madeleine’s Aunt Johanna – it set the tone for the décor colour scheme: aubergine, dark blue and pale green. “And a pop of red. Every home should have something red,” says Madeleine. The double-volume interior and mezzanine level enhance a sense of spaciousness.
To add a personal touch, Madeleine and the builder created a floor mosaic made with broken porcelain plates (above). The chairs also add a playful element with their backrests inscribed with different words beginning with the Afrikaans word “saam” (meaning together), such as “saamspeel” (play together), “saamwerk” (work together) and “saamdrom” (gather together). Madeleine painted the backrest with ordinary PVA paint and used homemade stencils for the inscriptions.
