Thanks for the informatio­n on spekboom in ‘Plant of the month’. According to my late father, spekboom also deters ants and termites, and bees love the flowers and produce good honey from it.

People have been planting spekboom as hedges for ages – the first stock farmers used it to make kraal fences. I hope this miracle plant will be utilised by everyone wishing for a greener environmen­t; spekboom has exceptiona­l carbon-storing capabiliti­es for turning back the tide of global warming.

So buy a spekboom or just break off a piece and plant it in a pot. Yes, we can make a positive difference to climate change through such a small interventi­on. Thanks to DIY Deon for all his brilliant projects! Here are some photos of floating shelves I made for our stoep after reading the article about Deon’s 1970s bathroom revamp in Home a few months ago. –
