Cast in stone

A large inherited mirror softens the feel of this potentially cold cement-look bathroom. “It’s old and battered but I like combining the cold look of the concrete walls and basin with an antique – it creates contrast,” says homeowner Martina Klopper. The small mirror was a market find. “I always envisaged a big, old mirror on that wall but I couldn’t find one, so I used the small freestanding one. When a big mirror surfaced out of storage, I was so used to having the small one that it stayed. I guess you could call it ‘accidental decoration’.” An old brass tray also adds warmth. The basin is cast concrete; a latex bonding agent was added to the concrete mix to make it less porous and it was sealed with Sovereign Seal. >>
