15 KITCHENS IN ONE
While The Midlands Kitchen is designed to serve up hearty, quick fare for those passing by on their way to other destinations, what you’ll find on your plate here is about as far away from the traditional idea of fast food as possible. That’s because top chefs have designed the menus. Mark Wood of Granny Mouse fame oversees the running of all 15 kitchens, the staff of which were trained specifically to be specialists in their respective cuisine. The ingredients used are also sourced from local farms – the Midlands provides a bounty of those, including grass-fed cattle, organically raised poultry, milk from a local dairy and cheese from a neighbourhood cheesery – or grown on site. This ensure all meals are not only sustainable and fresh, but also supportive of the local micro-economy. In this respect, the venture has also created over 100 jobs for local residents.Talk about soul food!
Finally, for those who – sadly – don’t have time to sit down to enjoy their meal in this buzzing atmosphere with pretty views of the surrounding hills, there is also a grab-and-go section which stays open until 20h00 (the restaurants close at 16h00). Their homemade pies are legendary!
You’re back in the car, and every member of the family is happy in the knowledge that they got their way and satisfied their own particular foodie craving. Everyone is smiling a little broader and no one is fighting over the iPad anymore. Slowly, as you cruise down the highway past Pietermaritzburg, they all doze off one by one, and you can sneak that delicious pastry out of your pocket and enjoy it in peace and quiet. Who said travelling had to be stressful?
