The Wolf­trap Steak­house Cham­pi­onships 2017 saw over 150 steak­houses com­pet­ing to be crowned South Africa’s Steak­house Cham­pion. The top 10 fi­nal­ists, as voted by the public, were vis­ited unan­nounced by ex­pert judges led by Pete Goffe-Wood, well-known MasterChef per­son­al­ity, and as­sessed ac­cord­ing to a strict score sheet that fo­cussed on the qual­ity of steak served, as well as side dishes and hos­pi­tal­ity. Ul­ti­mately it was de­but en­trant Rare Grill in Ke­nil­worth, Cape Town, that claimed top hon­ours (as well as be­ing named New­comer of the Year). The run­ner up, Lit­tle Ha­vana in Umh­langa Rocks, KwaZulu-Na­tal, had been the win­ner in 2015. In third place was The Lo­cal Grill in Park­town North, Jo­han­nes­burg, which has an in­cred­i­ble three ti­tles to its name. The Steak­house Leg­end of the Year was awarded to The God­fa­ther in Cen­tu­rion, a stal­wart in the in­dus­try, and Steak­house Chain of the Year went to the Cat­tle Baron Group.
