Rio Street water leak causes concern

Knysna-Plett Herald - - Letters | Briewe -

Ruth B Chowles, Knysna:

I write to you in the hope that your publication can make this situation known to the Knysna public.

I have been in contact with the Knysna Municipality since early July and still have no response.

The reservoir in Rio Street, Knysna Heights pumps good water onto the municipal property behind my property. Not only is this waste of water absolutely criminal, the regular flow of hundreds of litres of good water has caused an enormous erosion site and I believe it is also causing an ecosystem problem in Pledge Nature Reserve.

Municipal manager Kam Chetty responds:

I thank Ms Chowles for bringing this problem to my attention and assure her that our technical department, once made aware of the issues, have corrected the leak and are currently attending to the issue of the erosion.

When the problem of the leak was brought to the department’s attention they immediately adjusted the telemetry level to stop the pumps from pumping once the reservoir reached the 66% full level.

Immediately after a second incident was reported, the department investigated and found that the reservoir had a further gravity feed that supplied water to the reservoir. This feed was immediately closed off.

Permanent repair to the erosion is currently being investigated. The best remedy to this will be implemented on completion of this investigation.

Photo: Supplied

Outlet pipe now exposed to 1m in length Vertical crack from Rio Rd. down to dongo A photo of where the leak is in Rio Street, which has now been fixed.
