Is this not blatant racism?
In the Knysna-Plett Herald of 7 September, the Knysna municipality has submitted an advertisement for manager to the office of the executive mayor. The requirements state, and I quote, “The municipality would prefer to appoint an African or coloured female or an African or Indian male…”
Surely when an advert is placed it should state, “All persons may apply, and the most suitable/qualified will be chosen.” Of course this does not happen, and whites are no longer even considered for a position even if they are qualified.
I find your wording, Mr Chetty, really disturbing and quite appalling – if the advert was placed for “whites only”, can you imagine the outcry.
Knysna municipality responds:
All municipal advertisements contain this paragraph that states that all appointments will be made according to council’s EE (employment equity) policy.
This is a legislative requirement with regard to the Employment Equity Act ensuring that we represent the equity targets set out by provincial and national government.
In this instance, the mentioned target group is required for that band of vacancies and the municipality therefore needs to comply. Competency of the candidate is also measured to ensure compliance.
