KUDOS TO JANNIE
I must say that your magazine is really looking good and is a greatat read. I always look forward to enjoying it undisturbed on one of my flights.
The Kalahari Tough Test articlecle in the January issue brought backck some memories of another greatat Leisure Wheels adventure trip. You guys sure know how to pick thee destinations and put together an awesome adventure.
After reading Jannie’s farewell piece I felt somewhat sad as he comes to the end of an amazing career, but also privileged to have been able to work with and get to know him over the years.
I first met Jannie in 1986 when he was editor of Wiel and as an Engelsman, was somewhat daunted by this suave, well-spoken but obviously tough journalist who my then boss instructed me to only speak to in Afrikaans.
I soon realisedealised what nice people he and his wife Maryke are, and that he was quite happy to speak to me in English. Also, that he was an excellent journalist and photographer and an outstanding entrepreneur. Leisure Wheels was the first of many lifestyle-travel magazines, and without doubt, he foresaw and set this trend. Unlike many others, however, he stayed true to the core of his magazine: that travel and destinations make for greatgr stories, but that this is onlonly possible with a good and rreliable set of wheels.
JanJannie made his passion his careecareer, he knows Southern AfricAfrica like the back of his hand, has ttravelled the world and loveloves good food and wine. He taugtaught many young aspirant jourjournalists the business.
HHe is widely respected within the motoring industry and amamong the media and I know thathat I will not be the only one to mmiss him at future motor indindustry events and on Leisure WheelsW activities.
We at Volkswagen Group SoSouth Africa salute Jannie for what he has achieved and wish him well in his well-deserved retirement.
The current Leisure Wheels team has big shoes to fill, but you have proven in the last 12 months that you are more than up to the task. Matt Gennrich, General Manager Group Communications, Volkswagen Group South Africa
