The three-litre tur­bod­iesel en­gine that does ser­vice in the Amarok V6 is based on the same en­gine that does duty in a va­ri­ety of high-end VW, Audi and even Porsche mod­els. For the Amarok job, the en­gine re­ceived a few unique changes, with a more ro­bust ap­pli­ca­tion in mind. This in­cludes a newly de­vel­oped, water-cooled vari­able ge­om­e­try tur­bocharger (VGT), mod­i­fied pis­tons and more cool­ing cir­cuits.

The 24-valve V6 en­gine may not be quite as re­fined as the ver­sions of it in a Porsche Cayenne or VW Touareg, but it cer­tainly sets a new re­fine­ment bench­mark in the bakkie seg­ment.
