BMW PREVIEWS ELECTRIC X3

BMW’s i division is introducing its first model driven purely by electric power and it’s an SUV. The Concept iX3 is based on the all-new X3, which is an epic starting point if ever there was one.

The iX3 is fitted with BMW’s fifthgeneration electric drive system. Due to continued refinement, the electric motor, transmission and power electronics are all contained within a separate electric drive component. The batteries are more powerful than before.

Another feature of the high-voltage battery developed for the fifth generation of eDrive technology is its optimised charging capability. The energy storage system has a newly developed charging control unit and is designed to be hooked up to fast-charging stations generating up to 150kW. The highvoltage battery can be charged in just 30 minutes from one of these stations.

This smart packaging solution also represents a big leap forward for the way BMWs are built. In the near future, models from all the brands BMW owns could be equipped with different drive system variants. Whether that be a pure combustion engine, plug-in hybrid drive system or battery-electric solution can be integrated into any model, as desired.

In the iX3, the electric system produces more than 200kW, coupled to a real-world driving range of more than 400km.
