TOYOTA YARIS HYBRID

A few years later, Toyota launched the Yaris Hybrid. This impressive little tyke recorded a verified fuel consumption figure of 1.7l/100km in our hands, which is the lowest consumption figure we’ve ever seen.

Best of all, we weren’t even trying. The Yaris makes it so easy to achieve stellar fuel economy without having to resort to hypermiling tactics.

It’s not the most spacious hatch around but it does make a lot of sense if you intend to use it as a second car. Bounce around the city using as little fuel as possible during the week and you’ll feel less guilty about firing up the Land Cruiser V8 over the weekends.

As the top-of-the-line model in the range, the Yaris Hybrid was equipped with every gadget available at the time.

The later models remain expensive but the earliest versions can be purchased with low mileage for less than the price of a new Datsun Go.

Price: r135 000 Year: 2015 engine: 1.5-litre petrol + electric motor Mileage: 37 000km
