American artist, musician and gender activist was in South Africa earlier this year to shoot a short documentary on contemporary queer culture and trans identity. Well, the film Out of This World is out and it’s a tear-jerking compendium of Johannesburg’s cultural beauty — its people. In this case, there are interviews with artists and activists at the forefront of queer and trans visibility in South Africa. They include Umlilo, FAKA, Genevieve Louw, Rich Mnisi and Lady Skollie and, bar the film’s lack of lesbian and trans men representation, it’s exquisite. The 40-minute documentary is free to watch on YouTube by searching “Out of This World Mykki Blanco”.
