‘I’m more of a skincare girl than a make-up girl’
iwas born in Kenya but grew up in South Africa. My childhood is filled with beautiful memories – of playing in the estates of Nairobi, the simplicity of life in Mombasa, the constant presence of Table Mountain in family photos in Cape Town and the jacaranda trees that line the streets of Pretoria. As a little girl, I thought I would become a dentist or a dermatologist but quickly realised that anything to do with sciences was not my strength. I was encouraged by friends and family to try modelling, but it was only when I was in Matric, when my classmates voted me ‘Most likely to become Face of Africa’, that I thought I could seriously pursue it as a career.
Growing up, I thought [the singer] Sade was very beautiful because of her regal nature and timeless beauty. Today, my idea of beauty is encapsulated in the way my mother is content with her looks and the way she carries herself. I think beauty is less about being considered ‘beautiful’ and more about character, the confidence one exudes and the manner in which you treat others.
My beauty routine is quite simple. I adore the Eucerin Dermo Purifyer range. In the morning I use their cleanser and moisturise my face with Eucerin Dermo Purifyer Adjunctive Hydrating Care Face Cream SPF30.At night, after cleansing, I use the Dermo Purifyer Active Night Cream. I have dry skin so I always apply sweet almond oil on my face before bed.
I’m more of a skin-care girl than a make-up girl, but, being a model,I have to wear make-up for shoots. I love Estée Lauder’s Sumptuous Extreme Mascara. I use body butter from The Body Shop and, for my hair, Jamaican Black Castor Oil. My favourite perfume for day is Narciso Rodriguez and at night,Dior Midnight Poison. In winter,I can’t live without my Bio-Oil.
I need different looks for different clients, but I prefer my hair without extensions, so I usually wear it in a simple French braid. I’m reading Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie’s Americanah. I enjoy an array of music including Sade, Salif Keïta and Grupo Revelação.
