DANIELLA & ABIGAIL

WE CHECK IN TO SEE WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH OUR FAVOURITE NEW AND ESTABLISHED DESIGNERS WORDS KELLY FUNG

Marie Claire (South Africa) - - CATWALK BRIDE -

When it comes to weddings, designer Abigail Betz knows what she’s doing. She may not be new to the scene, but she is constantly working on something different and exciting. She and her much-loved brand are quickly moving into the future, as we could clearly see from her latest collection shown at Mercedes-Benz Johannesburg Fashion Week, aptly named ‘Into the Future’. What is possibly most noteworthy is that while Abigail continues to stay true to her signature style of old-world romance, intricate detail and luxury, she is also all for combining fashion and technology. Those who saw her show were lucky enough to witness her creation of a hologram showing the ultimate Betz wedding dress, inspired by traditional Japanese wedding attire and De Beers’s Shining Lights Awards diamond jewellery. Her partnership with De Beers also allowed her to play with revolutionary 3D printing. Then, using this technology, she created the first 3D-printed engagement ring. So why has the designer chosen to go the futuristic route? ‘I feel that technology is so integrated with our everyday lives,’ says Abigail,‘that it seems only natural to integrate technology with the products we make and sell every day, to make them more unique, special and desirable than any other product out there, through fabric, design and detailing.’
