mawlyn­nong is a small agrar­ian vil­lage in In­dia’s North-east­ern Megha­laya state, con­sist­ing of just 95 dwellings. The vil­lage is anoma­lous in many aus­pi­cious re­spects: the lit­er­acy rate is 100 per cent, and it’s also known as one of the clean­est and most ecofriendly vil­lages in In­dia – vol­un­teers sweep the streets sev­eral times a day, and lit­ter is col­lected into bam­boo bins and then buried in a pit and turned into com­post. >>
