Places to go, things to do, people to meet

the four of us have been involved in local design for many years. Cathy comes from a magazine background, Laurence founded Loads of Living, and together we’ve just curated 100% Design in South Africa, which included 100 Beautiful Things: specially selected SA objects from street craft to cutting-edge design. Trevyn and Julian – who are responsible for most exports of South African designs to the rest of the world through their agency Source and gallery Southern Guild – introduced Africa to its first international design fair, Guild, earlier this year. It brought some of the world’s best design galleries to Cape Town. Trevyn, Julian and Cathy are also part of Design Network Africa, which came first in the African Design Awards in Gabon. It’s been a busy year for us and a brilliant year for design.

The fashion and design industry places daily inspiration in our laps, and we’re so proud of local design, which is making its mark globally in many ways. There’s much talent to tap into. That’s why the four of us have teamed up to create Business of Design, two-day seminars in Cape Town and Jo’burg,in October, where highprofile speakers – from brand builders to top product and fashion designers – will talk about their own experiences. It’s really exciting to offer a learning opportunity to small-tomedium design businesses to aid industry growth in South Africa.

On weekends you’ll find us at markets, galleries and contemporary design and décor stores. There’s nothing like the feeling of discovering new creative talent. African design is having its moment, and we’re thrilled to be a part of it.
