FASHION Catwalk report
A new season calls for a round-up of the trends that stood out on the SS15 catwalks – here’s what we’ll be wearing come spring 2015
Summer is the perfect time to sport a onesie, which, according to Dior, Lanvin and Stella McCartney, needs to be full-length to strategically elongate the body.
Vertical, horizontal, diagonal… stripes are a serious contender in the fashion race and the bolder you wear them, the better. Opt for bright, solid, primary colours offset by black and white.
3 PURE PASTEL
Delicate pastels are not shying away anytime soon and sorbet shades are as strong as ever. Pick solid shapes like jackets, culottes and structured dresses to balance out the prettiness.
Pocket details against shades of green, khaki and beige bring us back to a modernday military theme. This year, look out for shorter hems, tough leather belts and collars on everything.
Designers interestingly incorporated a statement-making bow into their collections, working it in to the construction of the garment, as opposed to a simple appliqué detail. This gave each piece new dimension and movement.
6 POLKA DOTS
The classic polka dot is still seriously cute – and back with a bang. Full polka dot looks are what you’re after, like the sheer chiffon maxi-dresses at Thakoon.
The 70s feel of the season means this sometimes forgotten accessory is making a comeback. A scarf is small and simple but has the power to bring a whole outfit together.
There is only one rule for print this season: make sure you’re wearing a lot of it. Prada, Lanvin and Louis Vuitton showed plenty of print, almost like a dreamy patchwork quilt.
9 BLUE JEANS
Denim has always transcended trends and this season, blue denim hits full force. Embrace denim-on-denim and layer clean-cut, simple shapes.
10 SPORT UNIFORM
Each season, the sporty look brings a new flavour, effortlessly reinventing itself. This time it ’s a little more casual, with androgynous slouchy shorts or oversized slogan tees in bold colours.
Laser cut-outs, mesh, netting and modernised weaving are the new ways to show a little skin. It ’s edgier than last season’s sheer fabrics but no less sexy.
Louis Vuitton, Sonia Rykiel and Armani all had a mix of navy blue, white and red in their collections. Wear Breton stripes, gold buttons and loose silhouettes to ace this look.
13 STATEMENT BAGS
Bags in all wonderful and weird shapes and sizes are a big deal. From doughnuts to drawstrings, you need statement arm candy.
14 ASIAN DESIGN
We have our eye on the elements of Asian design, from billowing cuts and silky fabrics to geometric shapes and oriental prints.
From pretty embroidery and appliqué to bold, graphic and vivid colours, blooms are blossoming, right down to your accessories.
Traditional heels are on the back-burner for now as platforms take the lead as the season’s It shoe. From sandals and T-bars to lace-ups, the chunkier the better.
17 TROPICAL PRINTS
Summer is no fun without a nod to a tropical holiday. Marni’s oversized palm print juxtaposed with sporty silhouettes gave a cool edge to this repeatedly referenced paradise print.
Every season has a romantic story, and this time it ’s the pretty blush pinks and taupes that can make any dress instantly ethereal. Look to feather-light fabrics with loads of movement, either slightly sheer or with a subtle sheen.
19 SHADES OF RED
Give red a go for sunnies and specs, as seen at Versace, Emilio Pucci and Carolina Herrera.
20 LITTLE WHITE DRESS
Just as important as the LBD, it is a wardrobe staple this summer. Lace, cut-outs or broderie anglaise give a pretty and very feminine direction.
21 GRECIAN SANDALS
Gladiator sandals are given a dramatic update – they are elongated and laced-up right to the knee. This warrior-like sandal is for the brave.
When it comes to animal print this summer, faux snakeskin is the only one to really rattle our bones. It never goes out of style so keep those investment pieces close by.
23 BLACK LEATHER
If you think black leather should be saved for winter, think again. Keep your pieces for summer and look out for minimalist dresses.
24 THE VISOR
A hat is an obvious summer piece, which means your hat this year needs to be a slightly sporty, super-glam and functional visor.
The boho story of the season spotlights fringing as the detail to grab on to. From jackets and dresses to bags, the swishing movement brings some much-loved Western charm to your look.
