FASHION CLOSEUP

THE SPACE When she developed the concept for Maison Mara, Kelly wanted it to feel like walking into a dressing room where you could spend hours trying on beautiful outfits while drinking Mariage Frères tea. It is lled with hand-selected pieces and spaces she adores. ‘I especially love the marble bathroom – it is my favourite room in the store!’ THE INSPIRATION After studying fashion design in Paris and returning to Cape Town to open the store, Kelly’s inspiration still comes from the City of Light. ‘Paris inspires me every day. It’s where I learned everything I know about fashion.’ THE STYLE Kelly describes her personal style as ‘classic, but always with one key piece’. One of her favourites is a pair of Marni sandals. ‘They are made of pony hair and have huge jewels on them!’ She likes to keep things simple, and feels her navy blue cashmere sweater is the item that best describes her. What can’t she leave the house without Her Boucheron Quatre ring. THE FAVOURITES While she says she loves everything in the store, Kelly has a soft spot for a pair of Michel Vivien orange python pumps. ‘They were designed especially for Maison Mara,’ she says. THE FUTURE At the top of her wish list is ‘a pair of Saint Laurent patent knee-high boots and a trip to Tokyo’. She’s also looking forward to creative collaborations. ‘We will be working on a candle with Lola James Harper, the lifestyle brand of candles by French art director Rami Mekdachi. I would also love to work with local accessories brand Okapi.’
