Marie Claire (South Africa) - - ON THE TOWN -

What's it like working with your best friend, producer Lucas Goodman? Sometimes I wish I had more privacy, to be honest. I think, 'I don't want him to know that,' but he has to when we're writing songs. Where did the name Lion Babe come from? Lucas is a Leo and my spirit animal is a lion. We wanted something ambiguous because when we started out we thought it might be a bigger band, maybe four people, but we never found the other two. But there’s a reference to your hair there, too… It’s my mane! It embodies this wild woman that is my performance alter ego. People aren’t gonna forget you once they see that hair. Who are some of your musical in uences? Grace Jones, Michael Jackson, Prince, Diana Ross… I’ve been dancing since I was two years old, so the way I see melodies is through movement. You worked with Pharrell on your debut single. Was that a pinch-me moment? De nitely. He is such an icon for Lucas and me. And he’s so fresh! He walked into the studio looking like he had jumped out of a magazine. How do you want people to feel when they listen to your debut album, Begin? We want to make something inspiring for people. A lot of the music I grew up loving has those kinds of messages. Embrace yourself. Love yourself.
