Tell us about your character in High Rollers. Jakes Xaba mysteriously shows up at Kings Casino, where no one knows anything about him, except that he’s a whale (someone who gambles big money). To prepare for the role, I had to understand the basics of gambling, from playing roulette and blackjack to the terminology and psychology behind the idea of winning. I spent many hours at Montecasino! How does acting in a TV series compare to movies? Film-making is the ultimate performance dream for me, but I love playing a character in a series, such as my role in the soap opera Generations. It gave me a chance to escape my own character and step into spend so much time portraying another personality. This has been a big year for you. Things are working out well after a traumatic start to the year – in January, I woke up in hospital after being hit by a car while jogging. I’m lucky that I get to do what I love in my career. I’ve been in the entertainment industry for 15 years, and I’m still grateful every day. Watching my two-year-old son growing up and being with my wife, Lesego, also bring me joy. High Rollers is on SABC3 on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 7.30pm @mokoenalive
