Tap into your body of work

Men's Health (South Africa) - - REGULARS & DEPARTMENTS -

features in plenty of metaphors and descriptions, and with good reason. The role it plays in defining your health and movement is obvious; but for me, it’s the effect on your mind that’s really interesting. It’s proven that men who look after themselves physically not only live longer, healthier lives; on average they’re also more successful financially and socially, and have fewer issues with self-esteem and depression. That raises an interesting point, because men spend a great deal of money on products and services to become better in different areas of their lives – but the truth is, the starting point should be your body. Yes, getting stronger will make you look better; but realising that your body is a tool, and working towards mastery of it, can also help you in almost everything else. Skip the expensive gimmicks: your body can be its own salvation.

In this issue, we celebrate what it’ s capable of. We have role models in disciplines that celebrate the art of body weight training, such as park our pro Kenji Murapa (p104), coach Gideon Akande (p54) and his Total-Body Triple Threat plan, local climbing superhero Matt Bush (p16), andstuntman Bobby Ho ll and(p 46), whose training isn’ t only for show–it keeps him alive and pays his bills. And we’ ve got the ultimate Jungle Gym workout(p 110).

We also interviewed Sam He ugh an(p 90), star of the hit TV series Outlander. Sam partnered with James White of Roar kGy ms to get physically ready for the role, and learned some hard lessons on recovery and pushing himself too hard. Besides being a celebrated actor, he’ s also the creator of an inspirational fitness movement called My Peak Challenge. Through M PC he has raised over R 8.6 million for charity, and inspired thousands of men and women to get healthier. That’ s our kind of role model. And he’ s not alone–we have plenty more: men who are business and fitness le ad ers(p 42), Belly Off su cc es ses(p 72), cancer surv iv ors(p89),andev en guys who help to rehabilitate gang st ers(p 38). As we start reaching the end of the cold winter months, you may have picked up a little weight. No fear–we’ ve got you covered. We have the perfect mix of indoors ports(p 24) and nutrition tips(p 80) to help you lose that last winter layer, and we show you how to kick start your metabolism with 24 smart tips (p98).It’ s time to start your new body of work.
