Artist finds animal cartoons convey most fun
A cartoonist who is Mossel Bay born and bred, had a wonderful job working at Disney World in Florida.
This was until Covid-19 came about. Celeste Steyn explains: "Originally, I went over as a professional guide for South Africa." There is a difference between Disney World and Disney Land.
Florida's Disney World has four major theme parks, as well as resorts, golf courses and water parks. However, Disney Land is in Anaheim, California. Disney Land is the original theme park where the staff are dressed up as Disney animation characters, such as Mickey Mouse.
Celeste says: "At Disney World there are two sections where there are African animals. I worked at Animal Kingdom Lodge, representing South Africa. There are real, wild animals.
"I applied for the job. Because I was South African and had the accent, the shoe fitted perfectly. I went over for the first time in 2015 to 2016.
Develop new role
"Then they invited me to develop a new role and I went back in August last year. I did the artwork of the Animal Kingdom Lodge - African art and artefacts. I designed and created material for people in the African role, working with African animals."
When asked if she would go back to Disney World when the lockdown eased, Celeste replied that she doubted this.
"Disney let go of 28 000 people. It's a tragedy. For now I am in South Africa."
Celeste is working as a cartoonist, drawing mainly animals, which she calls her Plett Pets. She is living in Plettenberg Bay and her cartoons are published in two publications in the town.
"I have been drawing and doing cartoons all my life, but since 2009 I have done it professionally," Celeste says.
"I find it easier to convey fun through animals than people. Readers find it easier to digest the jokes."
