Territorial spirits are the enemy of progress and can manifest in many forms

HAVE you ever wondered why certain evil things are prevalent in certain places? This place might be under evil influence of a territorial spirit, which is a term some Christians use to identify demonic occupation of a specific geographic location, including neighbourhoods, schools, regions, streets or companies.

Territorial spirits are the enemy of progress. They manifest in the form of crime, corruption, killings, poverty, drunkenness, fornication, teenage pregnancy, illiteracy, career stagnation, racism, oppression, diseases etc.

Demonic spirits also claim territorial responsibility over land, government institutions, a family or even individuals. The way people of that particular area or territory act is sometimes the manifestation of the spirits controlling that territory.

“It is a geographical area the devil claims as his and he is ready to defend it against those who try to trespass. This is one reason churches don’t grow in particular neighbourhoods and why particular kinds of evil are on the increase in particular localities. For example, areas that have graffiti are always used by witches and demonic organisations to further their purpose. Demons are there to enforce the will of satan over the territory,” says Pastor Julius Oluwajodu of the House of Mercy Bible Church in Randburg, Joburg.

Pastor Julius adds that satan assigns territorial spirits to stop the will of God from progressing.

“Demons use great power over land, a community or territory because they accept territorial responsibility from the devil. They implement their territorial authority wherever satan allocates them. If a demon is assigned over an individual or community, it will resist the will of God and the advancement of the kingdom of God there.”

The concept of territorial spirits comes from passages such as Daniel 10, John 12:31, John 14:30 and John 16:11, while Mark 5:10 and Ephesians 6:12 suggest that fallen angels have been given some type of authority over a certain area.

Pastor Ngoako Motsepe of Lighthouse Church in Rustenburg says prayer and worship are the best way to fight territorial spirits.

“Psalm 68:1 says, 'Let God arise and His enemies be scattered.' Worship is a powerful and effective tool of defeating territorial spirits. We should have territorial authority over our communities and remove the powers of darkness functioning there.”

He adds that to fight these spirits, Christians need to enforce the will of God, be bold in their faith and receive the next level of empowerment.

Unrest in a particular community is a result of territorial spirits, which satan is using to stop the will of God
