Al-Badr is an Islamic children’s home based in Extension 11 in Lenasia, Johannesburg.

Established in 2007, the home caters for 27 children, aged between four and 13, who are cared for by six caretakers.

Fatima Mayet runs the home, alongside four house moms and two helpers.

The home is an extension of their Islamic school. Fatima says they rely heavily on the public for donations.

Fatima, who is a retired nurse, says her husband, who is also retired, goes out looking for financial assistance.

“We don’t get funding from the government because we are not an official orphanage. We just look after the kids because we care,” she says.
