A Dawn of a new chapter
Radio becomes Uzalo actress’ new-found love
ACTRESS Dawn King, best known by her MaNgcobo character on Uzalo ,isnowa radio personality. She recently joined Vuma FM which is an IsiZulu language commercial radio station based in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal, as a co-host of the breakfast show.
She is the first to admit that venturing into radio was not part of her current plan but wouldn’t have left the opportunity pass her by.
“This is my new-found love because I enjoy talking,” she excitedly shares. She says there’s nothing she doesn’t like about being on radio, especially waking up in the wee hours of the morning.
“I can’t say I don’t like the early hours because the call time is the same as on Uzalo,” she says.
Even though she has no technical expertise of the medium, her advantage is her voice and being able to touch lives. “I just need to be behind the mic because I can use my voice,” she gushes.
Even though her Joburg-based husband and kids are not able to listen to her show, Dawn says they’re so happy and proud of her achievement. In a previous interview with Move!, Dawn admitted that it is not easy being away from her family but they understand that she has to work. She didn’t downplay her husband’s support.
“Having a loving and responsible husband is such a blessing,” she said. However, her KZNbased relatives who are loyal listeners of the station get to hear on radio.
BROADENING HER HORIZONS
Dawn wishes to one day have her own TV show.
“I would love to have a TV show. It’s one of my goals,” she shares. She says she wants a show that would put the spotlight on unsung heroes.
“I’m passionate about what happens in society. I would like a show that would reflect society. A lot of people go through stuff and want to hear comforting words or laugh about their troubles. A show that would inspire and make them want to do something about their lives,” she explains.
INFUSING HER CALLING WITH HER CRAFT
When Move! enquired about the progress of opening her practice, the qualified sangoma is reluctant to stamp a time of when it will happen.
“In its own time, it will happen. I never feel like I’m never utilising my calling. My calling is infused with the work that I do,” she explains.
