STORIES FROM AROUND THE WORLD

Chinese woman is lucky to be alive after build-up of stones in her gallbladder

SHOCKED doctors at a Chinese hospital removed more than 800 gallstones from an elderly woman in one operation after she waited nearly two decades for treatment. The woman known only as Fan (66), from Jingmen City in China, had first been diagnosed with gallstones in 1998 – the result of her love for meat and especially portions containing juicy fat.

SHOOTING PAIN

Her high cholesterol caused the build-up of stones in her gallbladder, which first caused a shooting pain in her abdomen 19 years ago.

Surprisingly, Fan refused doctors’ suggestions to surgically remove her gallbladder and instead over the years only alleviated the symptoms through injections and painkillers. She also didn't change her diet.

Recently, however, Fan’s pain reached unbearable levels and she was finally convinced by her daughter to seek urgent medical attention.

ORGAN FILLED WITH STONES

Dr Shen Zhangyi, dean of medicine at Wuhan Jingdu Hospital in China, says he was shocked to find Fan’s gallbladder filled with stones. “The organ was filled with so many stones that it essentially could no longer function,” says the doctor.

The doctors performed a minimally invasive surgery on her gallbladder by inflating it and retrieving what turned out to be no fewer than 806 stones of different sizes. The small ones were only the size of sesame seeds, while large ones were bigger than chicken eggs.

Dr Shenng says it is a “miracle” that Fan was able to retain her gallbladder. Fan is now recovering after the surgery.
