Northern Eyethu - - NEWS - Tamlyn Jolly

THE CANSA Relay for Life has gone back to its roots and organisers are excited to announce the date – 27 October.

The event is set to be held at the ZCBF Community Park in Richards Bay, but is open to teams throughout the region.

Should anyone want to put together a team from Mtubatuba, St Lucia, Hluhluwe, or anywhere else, the Event Chair, Erika Vermaak can be contacted on 082 4487640 or erika.vermaak@ net

The 12-hour fun-filled overnight event, from 6pm to 6am, begins with an opening ceremony where the relayers are welcomed.

Cancer survivors then lead the first lap, celebrating their victory over cancer.

This is followed by a caregivers lap in recognition of those who help cancer patients in their journey.

There is also a silent lap, remembering those who have lost their battle with cancer.

All teams, with between 10 and 15 members per team, are then invited to walk together during the opening lap, which takes place after the survivors’ and caregivers’ laps.

With much symbolism throughout the event, day turning to night symbolises a person’s cancer diagnosis and the dark times the person goes through.

But, they make friends along the way who provide support through their darkest of moments.

As the new day begins to dawn, people realise they have come through the ordeal with new support networks to stand by them.

There is plenty of entertainment throughout the night and each team is encouraged to have its own theme.

Entry fee is R500 per team of 10 or R50 per person for day visitors (from 6 – 11pm).
