Girl, Six, And El­derly Nanny, 67, Die

IN Oc­to­ber this year a six-year-old girl and her 67-year-old nanny were killed af­ter a young driver, who al­legedly jumped a robot, rammed into them while they were stand­ing on a pave­ment. Cops have launched a man­hunt for the driver of the white Golf 3, who fled the scene on Strand­fontein Road. Shock­ing pic­tures of the ac­ci­dent along Strand­fontein Road and 5th Av­enue in Lo­tus River were shared on so­cial me­dia. No ar­rests had been made at the time of go­ing to press.

Teen Killed While Re­turn­ing From Gate­way Mall

IN Jan­uary a 17-year-old pedes­trian was killed and his 24-year-old friend se­ri­ously in­jured af­ter they were run over in two sep­a­rate in­ci­dents at the Trade Cen­tre off-ramp in Phoenix. The teen was run over by a Mercedes Benz while his 24-year-old friend was se­ri­ously in­jured fol­low­ing a hit and run which oc­curred shortly af­ter the first in­ci­dent. It is al­leged that the friends had left the Gate­way Shop­ping Mall in Umh­langa and were re­turn­ing to their home on Ber­ry­stone Place in Phoenix when the teenager was run over. His friend ran for help when he was struck by an un­known ve­hi­cle that fled the scene.

Teen Killed In Cen­tu­rion

LAST year in March 18-year-old Ruan Viljoen died in a hit-and-run in­ci­dent next to the N14 high­way in Cen­tu­rion, Gaut­eng. His body was found on the traf­fic is­land of the high­way near Jean Av­enue. He’d vis­ited friends the pre­vi­ous evening. It’s be­lieved that on the way home he’d lost con­trol of his car, locked and left it at the side of the road, and made his way to a nearby petrol sta­tion to call his par­ents. Ap­par­ently, that’s when he was hit. The au­topsy showed al­most ev­ery bone in his body had been bro­ken by the im­pact. Only this year was the driver of the ve­hi­cle (a man in his late 20s) ar­rested.

Friends Die In Hit-And-Run In KZN

IN May 2016 friends Praven Ma­habir, 25, and Sumeer Ma­haraj, 26, were killed in a hit-and-run crash on the Blue Lagoon on­ramp to the M4 north­ern free­way while help­ing their friend, Ju­naid Singh, fix his car tyre. Singh was also in­jured. Af­ter the Kia that crashed into them made off into the traf­fic with­out stop­ping, an ap­peal was made to the pub­lic to help find the driver. Ear­lier this year the case was fi­nally closed, with the driver, Kear­a­bilwe Re­filwe Modise-Moloto, 40, be­ing sen­tenced to 10 years in jail. Her leave to ap­peal was de­nied by Dur­ban Re­gional Court mag­is­trate Fariedha Mo­hamed.

Baby Killed In Eer­ste River

TEN-MONTH-OLD Chloe Louw was killed in De­cem­ber last year in an al­leged hit-and-run at Sun­rise Cir­cle in Muizen­berg, Cape Town. She was killed af­ter a bakkie hit the ve­hi­cle her fam­ily was trav­el­ling in on their way home to Eer­steriv­ier from Ocean View. Chloe, who was sit­ting on her mother’s lap in the back seat, was found be­tween the front and back pas­sen­ger seats and died of her in­juries. The driver of the bakkie ap­par­ently aban­doned his ve­hi­cle and ran off into nearby bushes.

Truck Kills Traf­fic Cop

IN Au­gust Road Traf­fic In­spec­torate Of­fi­cer Thokozani Gci­nani Cele, from Steadville, died in­stantly when he was killed on duty in a hit-and-run ac­ci­dent in­volv­ing a truck. Ac­cord­ing to a state­ment from the KwaZulu-Natal Trans­port, Com­mu­nity Safety and Li­ai­son Depart­ment, Cele and his col­leagues were on duty do­ing a speed trap when the ac­ci­dent hap­pened. Dur­ing the op­er­a­tion a truck failed to stop and ploughed into him. In a state­ment KZN MEC

Mx­olisi Kaunda de­scribed the in­ci­dent as a huge blow to the traf­fic fra­ter­nity and a set­back to the depart­ment’s com­mit­ment to save lives on the road. There was no up­date on any ar­rests

Child Se­ri­ously In­jured In Pre­to­ria

IN July 14-year-old Ri­aan Con­radie of Pre­to­ria North was se­ri­ously in­jured af­ter he was hit by a ve­hi­cle on the cor­ner of Burger and Sta­tion streets. Both his legs were bro­ken in the ac­ci­dent and he suf­fered a num­ber of other in­juries. He had to un­dergo an emer­gency op­er­a­tion af­ter one of his lungs col­lapsed. Fol­low­ing an out­cry on so­cial me­dia af­ter news broke that the mo­torist in­volved in the ac­ci­dent had fled the scene, the driver, a woman in her 60s, went to the po­lice sta­tion and handed her­self in. She told po­lice that she had been in shock af­ter hit­ting the boy on the road and kept on driv­ing.
