Girl, Six, And Elderly Nanny, 67, Die
IN October this year a six-year-old girl and her 67-year-old nanny were killed after a young driver, who allegedly jumped a robot, rammed into them while they were standing on a pavement. Cops have launched a manhunt for the driver of the white Golf 3, who fled the scene on Strandfontein Road. Shocking pictures of the accident along Strandfontein Road and 5th Avenue in Lotus River were shared on social media. No arrests had been made at the time of going to press.
Teen Killed While Returning From Gateway Mall
IN January a 17-year-old pedestrian was killed and his 24-year-old friend seriously injured after they were run over in two separate incidents at the Trade Centre off-ramp in Phoenix. The teen was run over by a Mercedes Benz while his 24-year-old friend was seriously injured following a hit and run which occurred shortly after the first incident. It is alleged that the friends had left the Gateway Shopping Mall in Umhlanga and were returning to their home on Berrystone Place in Phoenix when the teenager was run over. His friend ran for help when he was struck by an unknown vehicle that fled the scene.
Teen Killed In Centurion
LAST year in March 18-year-old Ruan Viljoen died in a hit-and-run incident next to the N14 highway in Centurion, Gauteng. His body was found on the traffic island of the highway near Jean Avenue. He’d visited friends the previous evening. It’s believed that on the way home he’d lost control of his car, locked and left it at the side of the road, and made his way to a nearby petrol station to call his parents. Apparently, that’s when he was hit. The autopsy showed almost every bone in his body had been broken by the impact. Only this year was the driver of the vehicle (a man in his late 20s) arrested.
Friends Die In Hit-And-Run In KZN
IN May 2016 friends Praven Mahabir, 25, and Sumeer Maharaj, 26, were killed in a hit-and-run crash on the Blue Lagoon onramp to the M4 northern freeway while helping their friend, Junaid Singh, fix his car tyre. Singh was also injured. After the Kia that crashed into them made off into the traffic without stopping, an appeal was made to the public to help find the driver. Earlier this year the case was finally closed, with the driver, Kearabilwe Refilwe Modise-Moloto, 40, being sentenced to 10 years in jail. Her leave to appeal was denied by Durban Regional Court magistrate Fariedha Mohamed.
Baby Killed In Eerste River
TEN-MONTH-OLD Chloe Louw was killed in December last year in an alleged hit-and-run at Sunrise Circle in Muizenberg, Cape Town. She was killed after a bakkie hit the vehicle her family was travelling in on their way home to Eersterivier from Ocean View. Chloe, who was sitting on her mother’s lap in the back seat, was found between the front and back passenger seats and died of her injuries. The driver of the bakkie apparently abandoned his vehicle and ran off into nearby bushes.
Truck Kills Traffic Cop
IN August Road Traffic Inspectorate Officer Thokozani Gcinani Cele, from Steadville, died instantly when he was killed on duty in a hit-and-run accident involving a truck. According to a statement from the KwaZulu-Natal Transport, Community Safety and Liaison Department, Cele and his colleagues were on duty doing a speed trap when the accident happened. During the operation a truck failed to stop and ploughed into him. In a statement KZN MEC
Mxolisi Kaunda described the incident as a huge blow to the traffic fraternity and a setback to the department’s commitment to save lives on the road. There was no update on any arrests
at the time of going to press.
Child Seriously Injured In Pretoria
IN July 14-year-old Riaan Conradie of Pretoria North was seriously injured after he was hit by a vehicle on the corner of Burger and Station streets. Both his legs were broken in the accident and he suffered a number of other injuries. He had to undergo an emergency operation after one of his lungs collapsed. Following an outcry on social media after news broke that the motorist involved in the accident had fled the scene, the driver, a woman in her 60s, went to the police station and handed herself in. She told police that she had been in shock after hitting the boy on the road and kept on driving.
