We grew up on a smallholding and, from a very young age, my father was always tinkering around the property repairing and maintaining various things. They often required electricity; for example, welding and drilling, quite often far from a fixed plug source. So extension cables were always used to bring the appliance close to the job on hand. This is where my dad taught us, my brothers and I, a similar technique to the one you describe. Instead of using fingers, though my dad showed us to wrap up the extensions round our forearms.
