WHEN REAL SKILL IS NEEDED

Popular Mechanics (South Africa) - - Letters - GERT ZOVITSKY RIVERSDALE

To “42 things you should know how to do” featured in May 2015. , I would like to add: l How to make a catapult (A “boere-kettie”) l How to become a crack shot with a catapult l How to cast with a Penn-type fishing reel

It took me quite a while, but I managed to reproduce the dovetail joint in the illustration (page 48) on my router-based jig. With everything lined up, it is possible to produce one joint (over 140 mm width) every five minutes. Proverbially speaking, the lid would not fit the bottle, so I made the bottle fit the lid. The experienced woodworker will have no difficulty in spotting the difference. By using the same cutters on an adapted template, I was able to produce half-blind dovetails as well.
