When sanding a large flat sur­face, like a ta­ble top, I use a steel ruler to check ex­actly where the high parts are that need sanding. To mark these sec­tions I colour in the bot­tom edge of the steel ruler with a pen­cil and rub the ta­ble top un­til all the high points are marked. Then just fo­cus your sanding on those ar­eas.
