VOLKSWAGEN POLO

-

A complete redesign, the sixth-generation Polo not only borrows styling cues from its siblings, but also now features high-tech driving aids usually found in a class or even two above. And although the compact dimensions remain, the new VW family styling endows the Polo with a distinctly grown-up look.

The new Polo is also bigger than its predecessor in every dimension and offers more space for the driver and passengers. Boot space is up too, from 280 to 350 litres. Besides the three usual trim lines (Trendline, Comfortline and Highline), there’s a special edition Polo Beats (features including a 300watt sound system), R-line package and, later this year, the GTI.

This is the first Polo based on the company’s modular transverse matrix (MQB) platform. According to VW, this offered the ability to create significantly more dynamic proportions with a long wheelbase, short body overhangs and a sporty ratio of key dimensions (longer, wider, lower overall height, but improved headroom).

Engine options start with a turbocharged 1,0-litre three-cylinder that produces 70 kw, mated with a 5-speed manual gearbox or optional 7-speed DSG ’box. Heading upscale gets you an 85 kw version of this engine with a 6-speed gearbox as standard and the 7-speed DSG as an option.

Driver assistance systems offered include blind spot monitor, park assist with manoeuvre braking, multi-collision braking system and LED headlights. It’s also the first Polo with digital instruments. Price: from R 235 900.
