A SOUTH African Airways female pilot, a banker and a cellphone business executive, as well as three leading big-brand independent companies, are in the running for the Minara Chamber of Commerce 2017 Business Recognition Awards.

The awards will be handed out at a gala dinner banquet in Johannesburg next week for the first time and away from its traditional Durban venue.

Minara president Ebrahim Patel said the relocation of the venue to the Living Image Centre in Fordsburg marked a shift in the organisation’s quest to host its colourful ceremony around South Africa.

“The selection panel is most impressed by the high calibre of candidates and companies vying for the various prestige awards,” he said.

Patel also said hard-talking SAfm radio talk show host and presenter Ashraf Garda would be the master of ceremonies when the event gets under way next Wednesday at 7pm.

SAA pilot Fatima Jakoet has been shortlisted in the professional achiever category along with Fatima Hassim of Vodacom Business and Faisal Mkhize of ABSA Bank.

Transport hauliers Bakers Transport of Pietermaritzburg, Frimax Food, also a KZN company and Johannesburg’s Dürsots Foods appear to be in a tight race for the Business Entity of the Year prize. – POST Correspondent
