THE GOVERNING body of Palmview Secondary School in Phoenix has submitted their recommendations to the Department of Education following the tribunal of six pupils caught on video assaulting a boy from a neighbouring school at a shopping complex.

“The SGB (school governing body) recommended that learners who were not directly involved in the incident be relocated and the learners who were directly involved in the bullying face expulsion from school and suspension from writing the NSC examination for a period of two years,” said SGB deputy chairman Mervyn Reddy.

The video showed a group of boys kicking and punching a Woodview Secondary pupil until he fell.

In the background, other pupils could be heard swearing and cheering the fight on.

Two motorists intervened.

Reddy said the pupils’ actions were assessed individually in terms of the school’s code of conduct.

“The unfortunate incident had gone viral and brought the Palmview community and school into disrepute.

“However, the community and school have overcome many other challenges,” Reddy said.
