Highway renaming sure to be a rocky road

Post - - OPINION - DHAYALAN MOODLEY Mobeni Heights

THE topic of renaming Higginson Highway to Amichand Rajbansi Highway is yet again a talking point.

It seems that Rajbansi reportedly has new praise singers, the Chatsworth Hindu Dharma Sabha, who are moving for the name change.

Does the Sabha feel this is a compelling priority?

While there are serious issues such as poverty, unemployment, the temporary closing down of the crematorium and the regular petrol price increase, they have decided that their priority is the renaming of the highway.

The community of Chatsworth must remember that at the height of apartheid Rajbansi was a leader of a party in the dreaded House of Delegates, while the majority of people did not have a say in the running of the country.

His participation was not supported by the vast majority of people from the Indian community.

To this very day his participation has resulted in the Indian community as a whole suffering as participants in the apartheid regime’s strategy of separate development.

I doubt this endeavour will have the support of the municipality.

If there were a renaming, I recommend that our struggle heroine Valliamma, the first martyr in the freedom Struggle, be considered.

This recognition would confirm the contribution of this Struggle veteran.

Higginson Highway is the main vein that connects and unites all of Chatsworth and the renaming of the highway would validate Valliamma’s spirit of uniting the nation.

To the Chatsworth Sabha, wake up and smell the coffee. It is time to remove your blinkers.
