The Story of Cre­ation

When Cre­ation Wines was es­tab­lished in 2002, it meant a brand-new be­gin­ning for Jean-claude and Carolyn Martin and their young fam­ily. The tal­ented cou­ple had taken the bold step of ex­chang­ing the winelands of Switzer­land for those of South Africa, and took on the chal­lenge of estab­lish­ing a win­ery on a re­mote farm without ba­sic ameni­ties such as run­ning wa­ter or elec­tric­ity. Si­t­u­ated along the rus­tic Hemel-en-aarde Road some 18 km from Hermanus, the land had never been planted with vines be­fore. So, a story of in­spi­ra­tion, pi­o­neer­ship, in­no­va­tion, hard work, and suc­cess has un­folded. A tale which is now re­flected in the unique new Wine and Small Plate Food Pair­ing menu of the es­tate.

Aptly named The Story of Cre­ation, the menu cel­e­brates the trend­set­ting spirit of the es­tate and fea­tures seven dif­fer­ent cour­ses or “chap­ters”, metic­u­lously paired with eight award-win­ning Cre­ation wines. Each wine en­hances an art­fully cre­ated small plate dish and thus the Cre­ation nar­ra­tive un­folds with each de­lec­ta­ble chap­ter. Ac­cord­ing to Carolyn, wine pair­ing guru of Cre­ation, The Story of Cre­ation aims to con­vey the art and sci­ence of flavour pro­fil­ing in a unique, in­ter­ac­tive way. Imag­ine the fra­grant, el­e­gantly spicy Cre­ation Re­serve Pinot Noir matched with a dish of goat’s-milk cheese, beet­root, rasp­berry, pome­gran­ate, radish, pis­ta­chio, and Pinot Noir salt, along with smoked duck breast and flavour­ful jus – pure magic to the palate. The vi­brant and se­duc­tive Cre­ation Re­serve Chardon­nay spec­tac­u­larly en­hances a small plate of Bo­erenkaas, fyn­bos honey, bee pollen, and truf­fle oil – a wow to be­hold, a de­light to savour!

On win­ning Wine Tourism South Africa’s pres­ti­gious Klink Award for Great Pair­ings for the fourth time this year, Carolyn pointed out that a pair­ing is only as good as the wine al­lows it to be. There can be no doubt as to the qual­ity of Cre­ation wines. Eight wines scored 90 points and more in a tast­ing con­ducted by Neal Martin for Robert Parker Wine Ad­vo­cate. Jamie Goode re­cently al­lo­cated no less than 14 Cre­ation wines 90 and more. At a ver­ti­cal tast­ing of the Cre­ation Re­serve Pinot Noir (2010 – 2016), Greg Sher­wood MW scored them all above 90.

The Cre­ation team also re­cently in­tro­duced an ex­cit­ing new Brunch Pair­ing menu while another new­comer to their reper­toire is the rather in­trigu­ing Kiss & Tell Pair­ing. In fact, since the es­tate’s ini­tial Wine and Cheese Plat­ter Pair­ing, it has be­come a pioneer in the field of wine pair­ing, now boast­ing no less than eight dif­fer­ent options – a ver­i­ta­ble trea­sure trove of culi­nary ex­pe­ri­ences.

Carolyn con­cludes, “At Cre­ation, we like to think of our Tast­ing Room not only as a place where we can pam­per our guests, but also as a space where we can in­ter­act and learn from each other. Our new ‘The Story of Cre­ation’ opens the way to amaz­ing pos­si­bil­i­ties.”
