A Poised Suc­cess

South African com­pany, Poise Brands, was founded in 2008 by Ja­nine Janse van Rens­burg, and holds the sole distri­bu­tion rights for in­ter­na­tional brands such as Mii Cos­met­ics, Juli­ette Ar­mand, and Mio & Mama Mio Skincare in South and sub-sa­ha­ran Africa.

From her of­fice in Jo­han­nes­burg, Janse van Rens­burg, spoke to PREMIER about her road to suc­cess and the pas­sion of her and her team for what they do.

“I al­ways knew that I was go­ing to run my own busi­ness and that it was go­ing to be some­thing big, some­thing big­ger than me, al­low­ing me to do good and change lives.”

Ex­plain­ing more about the im­por­tance of do­ing good and chang­ing lives through her busi­ness, Janse van Rens­burg says, “We [Poise Brands] believe that we are in a unique sit­u­a­tion where we get to meet so many peo­ple daily. We believe that while we do not have un­lim­ited funds to give to­wards char­i­ties, we can touch lives on a daily ba­sis in our ap­proach by shar­ing in­sights and in­spir­ing ev­ery­one to be the best ver­sion of who they can be.”

After qual­i­fy­ing in the skincare in­dus­try with both na­tional and in­ter­na­tional diplo­mas in So­ma­tol­ogy, Janse van Rens­burg fur­thered her stud­ies by com­plet­ing a higher di­ploma in Busi­ness Man­age­ment.

“From an early age I was taught the im­por­tance of hard work, com­mit­ment, do­ing ev­ery­thing to the best of your abil­ity, and to never com­pro­mise your val­ues and be­liefs. I have car­ried this with me through­out my ca­reer, and these are the prin­ci­ples with which Poise Brands op­er­ates on a daily ba­sis.”

The Poise Brands team is made up of nine women, how­ever this was not the ini­tial goal of Janse van Rens­burg when start­ing the busi­ness. As she ex­plains, “We just seem to at­tract very strong, pas­sion­ate busi­ness­women.”

Pas­sion is what Janse van Rens­burg feels strongly about, and what she wants her busi­ness to per­me­ate. She says, “Pas­sion [is] in ev­ery­thing we do. The minute pas­sion is lost, you are just another com­pany.”

To help this pas­sion grow and cul­ti­vate an in­spir­ing team spirit, Janse van Rens­burg ex­plains her “One Team, One Dream” ap­proach. “We have a weekly check-in where the en­tire team just chats about all the amaz­ing things we are work­ing on. We also have a com­pany chat group where we can share ev­ery­thing.”

When it comes to the prod­ucts that Poise Brands represents, it is im­por­tant to Janse van Rens­burg that they res­onate with the val­ues of the com­pany, and of­fer con­sumers only brands that they, the team of Poise Brands, love and are ex­cited about them­selves. “Qual­ity, unique­ness, and a twist of ‘gid­di­ness’ is what drives our prod­uct se­lec­tion.”

It is hard for Janse van Rens­burg to name her per­sonal favourites in the line-up of prod­ucts, and they ex­tend to most of the se­lec­tion. “I am so in love with all our brands! If I ab­so­lutely have to choose favourites, it would be the Mio Skincare Liq­uid Yoga, Mama Mio Tummy Rub Oil, Juli­ette Ar­mand 6% AHA Fluid & Caviar Line, and Mii Cos­met­ics Shim­mer & Sparkle Min­eral Dust, and the Min­er­als Ex­quis­ite Eye Colours.”
