‘Tougher mine safety’

MIN­IS­TER of Min­eral Re­sources Mosebenzi Zwane said yes­ter­day that the Kusasalethu mine in­ci­dent, in which five minework­ers lost their lives, should be a “turning point” in the health and safety of the coun­try’s min­ing in­dus­try.

“We will be­gin to be tough in ex­er­cis­ing our pow­ers on reg­u­la­tory is­sues like this,” Zwane said. “I have told the in­spec­tors to leave no stone un­turned. We must see what man­age­ment has done to rem­edy the sit­u­a­tion of health and safety.”

Zwane was speaking af­ter his meet­ing with Har­mony Gold’s man­age­ment about the ac­ci­dent that oc­curred at the Kusasalethu mine near Car­letonville on Fri­day last week. – ANA
