Bur­sary scam­ster fined

HEALTH Department worker Lindiwe Cyn­thia Nqumashe, 44, who was in charge of is­su­ing bur­saries to stu­dents, has been sen­tenced at the Kim­ber­ley mag­is­trate’s court for run­ning a scam that saw her pocket R80 000.

Nqumashe, who was work­ing for the North­ern Cape gov­ern­ment, ap­proved ex­tra bur­sary al­lo­ca­tions to stu­dents. She then alerted the in­sti­tu­tions to “over­pay­ment” and asked that the funds be trans­ferred back into her bank ac­count. She pleaded guilty and was fined R50 000 or six years in jail plus three years for money laun­der­ing, sus­pended for five years on con­di­tion she paid back R46 736.
