Bursary scamster fined
HEALTH Department worker Lindiwe Cynthia Nqumashe, 44, who was in charge of issuing bursaries to students, has been sentenced at the Kimberley magistrate’s court for running a scam that saw her pocket R80 000.
Nqumashe, who was working for the Northern Cape government, approved extra bursary allocations to students. She then alerted the institutions to “overpayment” and asked that the funds be transferred back into her bank account. She pleaded guilty and was fined R50 000 or six years in jail plus three years for money laundering, suspended for five years on condition she paid back R46 736.
