Accolades for medical corps troops with 20 years’ service
SOLDIERS who have served the country for 20 years – including at the time of Nelson Mandela’s death – were finally given their rightful accolades yesterday.
They were honoured during the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) medal parade at the Military Health Training Formation quarters at Thaba Tshwane in Pretoria.
Lieutenant-General Aubrey Sedibe, surgeon-general of the SANDF, said receiving a medal was one of the best experiences in any officer’s career.
He said: “Serving the country for 20 years is a confirmation of one’s contribution towards the organisation and selflessness at its purest version.
“You exemplify the finest qualities of the ‘health warriors, serving the brave’.
“In these 20 years you have had to act beyond the call of duty and this medal will now and forever form part of your history as a soldier.” Recipient of one of the 20-year long service medals, Lieutenant-Colonel Susan Joubert, said she was proud to have finally received a medal for something she has always loved doing.
Joubert, a pharmacist in the military, said she lasted as long as she did as the military offered her the opportunity to have a dual career.
She added: “I lasted this long because of the love I have and the opportunities I have been awarded. It’s been my calling.”
Another recipient, Lieutenant Joyce Madiba, said she felt great having received the 20-year medal as she took being in the military as a calling and a new culture.
Madiba said: “It wasn’t just another job for me.
“Being in this line of work just got into my system and when I see all these people marching, I know I am home.”
Lieutenant-Colonel Thobile Ndlovu said she felt proud to have been awarded the Mandela Medal for the work she did following the death of Madiba.
Ndlovu was tasked as the liaison officer receiving people coming from outside the country to mourn the statesman’s passing.
