Denmark on high alert

Pretoria News - - WORLD -

COPENHAGEN: The Danish government has told the European Commission it will extend its border controls until May 12, reports Danish news agency Ritzau.

Denmark cited the serious risk of terror as its reason for extending the exceptional measure, which is allowed within the framework of the Schengen agreement. If not renewed, the measure would have expired on November 12.

Since implementation of the controls, random checks in trains, buses and cars on the GermanDanish border have been carried out, as well as at the Gedser and Rodby ferry ports.

The extra workload prompted Denmark to deploy soldiers to the border to provide relief to police. – dpa
