No mediation response
MOSCOW: Neither Iran, nor Saudi Arabia, has responded to Moscow’s initiative to serve as a mediator in normalising contacts between the two states, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said yesterday.
On Wednesday, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Bogdanov said Russia was ready to become a mediator in Saudi Arabia-Iran contacts and provide a negotiation platform for them.
A major diplomatic row between Shia-dominated Iran and Sunniruled Saudi followed the execution of prominent Saudi Shia cleric Sheikh Nimr al-Nimr by authorities in January 2016. The move triggered public backlash in Iran. The two countries severed diplomatic ties in the wake of these events. – Sputnik
