State of the Na­tion’s health­care

In his State of the Na­tion Ad­dress on 13 Fe­bru­ary 2014, Pres­i­dent Ja­cob Zuma high­lighted the fol­low­ing achieve­ments in health­care: • 300 new health fa­cil­i­ties were built over the past five years, in­clud­ing 160 new clin­ics. • 10 new hos­pi­tals were re­fur­bished or built. These are lo­cated in Lady­brand, Ger­mis­ton, Mamelodi, Natal­spruit, eThek­wini, Zola, Bo­janala, Vry­burg District, Swartruggens, Khayelit­sha and Mitchell’s Plain. • 2.4 mil­lion people were ini­ti­ated on an­tiretro­vi­rals ( ARV) by 2013. The tar­get is to in­crease this num­ber to 4.6 mil­lion people in the next term. • Life ex­pectancy has in­creased from a low of 54 in 2005 to about 60 in 2011. • Mother- to- child trans­mis­sion ( MTCT) of HIV is de­clin­ing. • Na­tional Health In­sur­ance will ex­tend health­care to the poor.
