Beetle off with Pretoria trail fan Jani du Toit.

Tell us about your Insta name.

The short version: it refers to my name and the name of my blog. And the long version: it combines the initials of my maiden name, Jani Bester, with my cousin’s name, Robin.

What’s the story behind your top-three most-liked pics? Where did you take them, and why? Instagram 1:

I really like insects and interesting little things. I went running with my husband one afternoon, at an easy pace because he’s a beginner. This beautiful jewel beetle caught my eye. It was a terrific find.

Instagram 2:

We were flying to Cape Town for a family wedding, and everything that could go wrong, had: our flight had been delayed and all the other flights were overbooked. We had to keep ourselves busy. In a bookshop, I came across this book I’d wanted to read for a while, Ryan Sandes: Trail Blazer (the SA trail legend’s autobiography), and I thought, what the hell. While we were on holiday, I read it every time I had the chance. Sandes has inspired me so much, and I’m excited to dip my toes deeper into trail running. I want to participate in endurance races, like he does.

Instagram 3:

Mid-run at Faerie Glen Nature Reserve. I had just fallen so hard that I’d even torn my tights! I ended up with a big gash on my leg, and I still had to run five kays to get back home from the Reserve. My experiences on the trails in the last few months have taught me that you really are capable of more than you think.

What inspires your running photography?

I’m a curious person, and I love sharing things with people – people are blind to life. When I’m running, I get to see and experience the environment. I see things that I wouldn’t have otherwise, and I enjoy sharing photographs with people. Sometimes I have to force myself to stop taking pictures, and actually concentrate on my training!

How long have you been running?

I’ve been running recreationally since high school, but I only started taking it seriously a year ago. And now I want to do it full time, as a career. I’m still figuring out the logistics of it, though.

What’s your favourite distance to run?

I enjoy running long distances on the trails. When you live in the city, that feels like the closest thing to going on an adventure. I would like to concentrate on doing multistage trail-running races in the future.
