Two areas often overlooked by runners keen on experiencing the trails of the iSimangaliso World Heritage Site are the Cape Vidal and Maphelane Dune sections. Remote beaches and endless ocean vistas characterise both of these areas within the wetland park, with safe and easily accessible route options to boot.
Cape Vidal comprises more than 20km of runnable beach, interspersed with rocky shelves unfolding northwards, with no-brainer access from a breathtaking camp site and caravan park. Maphelane – one of the highest vegetated dunes in the southern hemisphere – looms just to the south of the village of St. Lucia. A leisurely 4km run gets you to the foot of the dune, with a stiff 300m ascent for gorgeous views across the ocean.

BEST TIME TO RUN
The KZN north coast is hot and humid for most of the year, but fortunately a consistent ocean breeze helps make the daytime temperatures more bearable. Remember, it’s good to keep an eye on any thunderstorm build-up during summer afternoons.
Follow the N3 from Durban for an easy cruise; the north-bound highway runs parallel to the coast for around 240km, before you turn towards Mtubatuba. From here, just follow the signage along the R618 to St Lucia.
